Backflow Prevention Testing

A backflow preventer stops water flowing the wrong way through the system and carrying contamination back into the drinking supply. It is a mechanical device, it can fail without any outward sign, and that is why testing is required on a schedule.

Many commercial properties, irrigation systems and fire lines are required to have their assemblies tested annually and the results reported to the water purveyor.

Why it is required annually

The check valves and relief mechanism inside an assembly wear. A device can look perfectly fine and still have stopped protecting the supply — testing is the only way to know, which is why the requirement is periodic rather than one-off.

Reporting

Test results generally have to go to the water purveyor to satisfy the requirement. Ventura, Oxnard and Camarillo each administer their own programme, so the specifics come from whichever agency serves your property.

If it fails

A failed assembly usually needs a repair kit or component replacement, then a retest. As a licensed plumbing contractor we can carry out the repair as well as the test.
