Garbage Disposal Repair & Installation
Disposals are one of the more common small jobs we get called out for. Some are a straightforward fix; others have reached the end and are better replaced than repaired.
A leak from the body of the unit, rather than from a connection, generally means replacement — once the housing has corroded through there is nothing to repair.
Jam or failure
A humming disposal that will not spin is usually jammed rather than dead, and many have a reset button and a hex fitting underneath for clearing it. A unit that is completely silent is more often electrical or a failed motor.
Leaks
Where the leak is matters. A drip from the sink flange or a drain connection is a repair. Water coming from the body of the unit itself means the housing has corroded through, and that is a replacement.
Replacing it
Replacement is generally quick. It is also a sensible moment to check the trap arm and the connection to the dishwasher, since those are right there and are common sources of slow leaks.
