Water Softeners & Filtration

Hard water is a fact of life in this part of California. The dissolved minerals leave scale on everything the water touches — inside the water heater, in the pipework, on fixtures and glass, and through dishwashers and washing machines.

Softening and filtration are different jobs. Softening addresses hardness; filtration addresses taste, odour and particulates. Which you need depends on what you are actually trying to fix.

Softening versus filtration

A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale. A filter targets taste, smell, chlorine or sediment. They solve different problems, and it is worth being clear which one you are trying to solve before buying equipment.

Protecting the water heater

Scale is what shortens the life of water heaters here, and it is particularly hard on tankless units. Treating the water is often the difference between a tankless heater reaching its expected life and falling well short of it.

Installing it properly

Placement in the system, correct bypass arrangement, and a proper drain connection all matter. A softener plumbed in without a bypass becomes a problem the first time it needs servicing.
