Water Heating

Tankless Water Heater Installation

A tankless unit heats water as it passes through rather than keeping a tank hot around the clock. Done right it means continuous hot water and no standing heat loss. It is one of the four specialities on our trucks.

The catch is that a tankless heater is only as good as its installation. Gas supply, venting and — in hard water areas — descaling all have to be handled properly, or the unit will underperform and its life will be short.

Gas supply is the usual constraint

Tankless units draw considerably more gas at peak than a storage heater. Existing gas piping is frequently undersized for one, so the line has to be assessed and often upsized. Skipping this is the single most common reason a tankless install disappoints.

Venting

These units need their own venting, in the correct material, routed correctly. It cannot simply be shared with the old water heater's flue.

Hard water and descaling

Ventura County water is hard, and scale is what shortens a tankless heater's life. Provision for periodic descaling should be built into the installation, and in many homes it is worth pairing the unit with a softener.
